COOKING CHALLENGE
Week1.Chinese handmade noodles with egg,green pepper&eggplant topping

How long did the cooking process take
Since I'm not very skilled at cooking yet, just rolling and cutting the dough already took me almost an hour. Then I went to prepare two different sauces-one with green pepper and egg,the other with eggplant-which took me another hour.
In the end,it was nearly two hours of work before I finally sat down to eat.

How easy was it to prepare
The ingredients were actually pretty simple — just flour and water for the noodles, then green peppers, eggs, eggplant, and a bit of minced meat for the sauces. It’s not a complicated dish at all, but the spices turned out to be quite a handful. Lining up all the bottles and jars made my kitchen look busier than it really was.

How much did it cost in total
The whole meal probably cost under 40 euros. Most of the seasonings were from the Chinese supermarket, which makes them a little more expensive than the local ones

How did it taste
The noodles turned out wonderfully chewy and springy, really satisfying to bite into. Both sauces were flavorful, each with its own charm.Personally,I liked the eggplant one more, maybe because I spend more time on it,and it somehow carried a bit of extra"heart" along with the taste

How many people did it feed
The portions were just right for the four of us. Everyone ate until they were full, and by the end we were all completely satisfied — nothing feels better than sharing a homemade meal together.

First cooking summary
Cooking wasn't as difficult as I had imagined, but it was definitely tiring.i feel i really lucky to had my friends' help and encouragement-thanks to them,I managed to complete the very first proper meal I've ever cooked in my life

Having a meal with friends
IS ONE OF THE HAPPIEST THING IN THE WORLD!!!!
Week2:Steak&Pasta Plate

How long did the cooking process take
Cooking this dish took me around 30–35 minutes in total. The steak was the most time-sensitive part because I really wanted to get the perfect medium-rare. The pasta and egg were much easier, so I cooked them while the steak was resting.

How much did it cost in total
It cost me about €15 overall, which is definitely cheaper than eating out, and honestly it tasted just as good as a restaurant meal — maybe even better because I made it myself😂
How did it taste
The steak was juicy and tender, the pasta was slightly acidic from the tomato sauce which balanced the fat, and the fried egg… I didn’t plan on it being such a game-changer, but it worked perfectly.
How many people did it feed
The dish technically serves 1–2 people. Realistically, I ate the whole thing myself!but this should be a great option for a meal for one

Cooking summary
This dish taught me that you don’t need fancy ingredients to make a “fancy” meal. It’s more about attention, patience, and plating. And honestly, it made me feel a little proud — like maybe one day I could open a tiny dinner place for tired people who just want a plate of something honest and good.
Week3:Salmon Pasta Plate-Healthy but not boring

How long did the cooking process take
This one took about 25–30 minutes in total. Salmon cooks pretty fast, so most of the time was spent boiling the pasta and steaming the broccoli. It was actually a surprisingly relaxing process, everything finished almost at the same time.
How much did it cost in total
Around €12-15 depending on the price of salmon that day. Salmon was the most expensive part, but the rest (broccoli, pasta, cherry tomatoes) was very affordable. Definitely cheaper and healthier than ordering take-away.
How did it taste
Salmon has always been my favourite, so honestly it tasted exactly the way I hoped — really, really good. It was tender and flavourful, the pasta was sweet and slightly tangy, and the broccoli made everything feel balanced and fresh.
How easy was it to prepare
I’d say very easy. Salmon only needs salt, pepper, lemon juice and a bit of butter. The pasta sauce was store-bought and the broccoli was just lightly steamed. It’s probably one of the easiest “looks fancy” meals I’ve made.
How many people did it feed
This dish is basically a standard portion for one person. It’s exactly the amount I’d make just for myself, and honestly it felt just right-not too heavy, not too little.
Cooking summary
Overall, this meal felt lighter and more balanced than last week’s steak. It reminded me that eating healthy doesn’t have to be boring.Since salmon is already my favourite food, the taste was exactly what I expected: satisfying and familiar. It also made me realise that even a simple meal for one can feel special when you plate it nicely. I’d definitely make this again on a day when I want something healthy, quick, and still enjoyable.
Week4:Oyster Sauce Lettuce & Fried Egg Noodles
How long did the cooking process take
Both dishes took around 35-30 minutes in total. They are very fast Chinese home-style dishes, so the cooking itself didn’t take long,it was mostly washing, chopping, and getting the wok hot.
How much did it cost in total
To be honest, not as cheap as it looks because the sauces and ingredients all came from the Chinese supermarket. Oyster sauce, soy sauce and sesame oil are not cheap here. But once you have the seasonings, the actual vegetables and noodles aren’t too expensive.
How did it taste
Exactly like something I’d eat at home. The lettuce was still crunchy and coated in oyster sauce, and the noodles absorbed the egg and soy flavour really well. It may not look fancy, but the taste was very comforting
How easy was it to prepare
Very easy. Both dishes are beginner-friendly and almost impossible to mess up. Chinese stir-fry is all about timing, but once you know the order of ingredients, it’s straightforward and fast.

How many people did it feed
It fed three people, all of us Chinese. They said it tasted like home and that it made them feel a little homesick in a good way. Food really does bring back memories.
cooking summary
This meal ended up meaning more than just dinner. My friends said it tasted like home, and for a moment we all felt a little homesick. It reminded me that food isn’t just about cooking; it’s about memory, familiarity, and feeling connected even when we’re far away.

Week5:Filet Steak with Creamy Mushroom & Shrimp Pasta

How long did the cooking process take
This one took around 40–45 minutes because there were several components: searing the filet, cooking the pasta sauce, sauteing the shrimp and mushrooms, and then frying the egg and vegetables. Definitely the most time-consuming dish I’ve made so far.
How much did it cost in total
A little bit expensive. Filet steak and shrimp are not cheap, and the cream, mushrooms, and asparagus also added to the cost. In total it was around €25which is more like restaurant pricing — except I had to wash the dishes myself. But I really wanted to treat myself this week so I’d say it was worth it.
How did it taste
So good that I forgave the price! The steak was tender and juicy, the pasta was rich and creamy with a hint of garlic and mushroom, and the shrimp added sweet, buttery flavour. The egg actually tied it all together better than I expected. It felt indulgent but satisfying like a “special occasion” meal even though it was just a random weekday.
How easy was it to prepare
Not very easy. It wasn’t technically difficult, but managing the timing for steak, sauce, shrimp, pasta, and egg all at once was stressful. This dish requires multitasking and attention, otherwise something will overcook. But it was a good challenge, and I learned a lot from it.
How many people did it feed
This was a meal for one, it looked like something meant for a date night but l'm actually in my student room. It was a lot of food, but I enjoyed every bit of it, and having the whole plate to myself felt like a reward.
Cooking summary
This cooking challenge started as an assignment, but it gradually became something meaningful in my daily life. I learned new skills, but more importantly, I learned that food can create comfort, memories, and a sense of home even when I’m far away from it. Cooking for myself felt like self-care, and cooking for friends reminded me that sharing food is a way of connecting. It turned ordinary days into small, warm moments, and that’s what I’ll remember most.
